useless link icon

Before every link in the page body, there is an "empty" space with a barely visible icon:

no-icon

On hover the icon turns orange:

useless-icon

This icon is absolutely useless IMO. In its unactivated state the empty space breaks the visual flow of the text. Though they are very in vogue these days, I personally find icons to be pretty useless and just add clutter to the page. Do we really need this one? The link is already highlighted by color. An icon is overkill.

    It differentiates external links.

Well, then can you make the non-active icon more visible? Maybe the page font color? Or make an icon for each of the colors - link, hover and visited?

Even though I dislike the look of this icon and find it an annoyance, it now conforms to the link coloring scheme of the site. A nice improvement. Thanks.
