Chromium kills xserver in VMWare VM with open-vm-tools installed under cinnamon
Issue: chromium 53.xxx ( currently 53.0.2785.113 ) browser kills xorg server when launched in VMWare player 12.5.0 with open-vm-tools installed. Extremely older versions of the 12.x ( 6+ months ) were working without issues. open-vm-tools and open-vm-tools-desktop were both reinstalled through APT to rule out VM image corruption. glxinfo also reports direct rendering enabled, and glxgears reports framerates that cannot be achieved through soft rendering. The issue appears to be a combination of chromium, cinnamon, and the newest VMWare player.
Chromium also works perfectly fine in a Debian Jessie 8.6 Cinnamon ( SystemD enabled ) VM, lending credence that it is not a purely chromium issue, rather an issue with some part of the Devuan install, whether build issue or dependency issue.
Chromium crashes chrome_crash_cinnamon.log with these errors when launched in the cinnamon desktop environment, killing the xserver and kicking the user back to the greeter.
Chromium reports nearly the same initial MESA errors in XFCE, but successfully launches and is usable chrome_good_xfce.log
EXPECTED BEHAVIOR: chromium should not crash the xserver, and chromium should work in cinnamon as well as XFCE.
